RELATED: Awesome Video Game Hairstyles, Ranked By How Much Maintenance They Must Require
While fans always see their favorite characters all made up and ready to go for the day’s adventure, it’s curious to think about all the intense prep that happens behind the scenes. How many bottles of hairspray does All Might go through, or how often do all the Sailor Scouts have to redye their hair? Here are some of the most outrageous anime hairstyles, ranked by how much maintenance they require.
10 Hunter x Hunter- (Adult) Gon Freecss
Gon normally has a bit of a complicated hairdo, but it’s when he transforms into his adult form that his hair gets out of hand. Hunter x Hunter’s protagonist usually has his black hair spiked straight up with green highlights near the tips. However, once Gon transforms into his adult form, his hair grows to tremendous lengths, sticking straight up, meters in the air!
Managing to get his sky-high hairdo to stand up straight must take buckets of gel and a stepladder or two.
9 Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure- Giorno Giovanna
Part five protagonist of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Giorno, has one of the most stylish hairdos throughout the Jojo series. Giorno has medium-length, golden hair that he keeps back in a braid he keeps behind him. However, the most notable (and most difficult to style) part of his hairdo are the three large curls he has kept neatly in a row across his forehead.
Even if his simple braid and other textures in his hair were done and fixed in place, achieving those neat and distinct curls would be a nightmare to maintain. Hopefully, Giorno gets a handy face shield whenever his hairdresser brings out the hairspray!
8 Dragon Ball- Goku
While the famous Dragon Ball protagonist has to worry about a long session of styling with numerous bottles of gel and cans of hairspray, that’s not even the worst of it. Goku’s default black hairdo may already seem like a daunting task for a hairdresser, but with how often Goku changes up his look, it’d be a complete nightmare to maintain!

Every new transformation Goku goes through, his hair (eyebrows included) also changes; not just in color but also in style and length! Goku’s upkeep would be a tiring ordeal from his plain black hair to the long bright yellow locks of his Super Saiyan three look.
7 Demon Slayer- Kyojuro Rengoku
It’s only natural that the Flame Hashira sport a fiery look not only through his clothes but also through his hair. Demon Slayer’s Rengoku has medium-length hair, which may seem a bit easier to maintain, but it’s in the styling and dyeing process that the trouble arises.
Rengoku has a blonde hairdo with sharp, jagged, very defined layers with a bit of a dip-dye vibe with red at the ends, resembling fire. All the layers he has going on would take forever to cut, style, and then maintain every day; and that’s assuming that Rengoku doesn’t also get his eyebrows groomed every styling session!
6 Kill La Kill- Ragyo Kiryuin
Ragyo Kiryuin is the antagonist of Kill La Kill and goes against the norm by having a colorful villain aesthetic instead of the typical dark, colorless one seen in many anime series. Ragyo is a character that needs her luxurious lifestyle, and it definitely shows through both her wardrobe and hair.

Ragyo’s hair is rather short (at shoulder-length) and while it may be a simple silver color on the top, the layers underneath are filled with all the colors of the rainbow. The long, intense bleaching session would be difficult enough but Ragyo would then have to tack on a few extra hours to wait for the multicolor rainbow she has on her under-layers. At least she can save her hair from heat damage as she doesn’t seem to have a rigorous styling process that follows.
5 Demon Slayer- Mitsuri Kanroji
Yet another Demon Slayer character that has a rather demanding hairstyling process is Love Hashira, Mitsuri. Mitsuri sports her hair in three massive braids along with blunt straight-cut bangs. As if all the braids weren’t enough, Mitsuri has pink hair that gradients into a bright green to match her emerald eyes.
Achieving these lighter colors requires a long (and damaging) bleaching process prior to adding the color, so it’s clear that Mitsuri isn’t just the cutest member of the Hashira, but also the most patient!
4 Dr. Stone- Senku Ishigami
Only a pure genius like Senku himself would be able to figure out hair dye in the harsh conditions of the Stone World. Dr. Stone’s protagonist, Senku has hair that starts white at the root and begins to gradient into a light green about halfway down his hair. These lighter colors would definitely need a few bleach sessions to achieve, but the styling process may take just as long!
Senku’s hair is one of the many anime hairstyles that seem to defy gravity as his hair is in neatly defined layers that all stand up straight with perfect spikes right at the ends. It seems as if even geniuses need a bit of pampering as well.
3 Toriko- Sunny
Sunny is one of Toriko’s Four Heavenly Kings and knows how to incorporate his powers/abilities into his fashionable look. Sunny’s hair is part of his “sensor” power, utilizing his strands of hair to be able to essentially taste whatever it touches.

Sunny’s hair consists of four different shades/colors: white, pink, blue, and green. His hair is separated into distinct strands that have each color neatly styled together without muddling any two mismatched colors together. The amount of bleach and dye that would be involved in each touch-up session would be ridiculous considering how long Sunny keeps his hair! Then, to top it off, each colored section must then go through a lengthy gel and hairspray styling process as well.
2 Pokémon- Jessie
Long-time member of Team Rocket, Jessie, must spend just as much time styling her hair every day as she does trying to catch Ash’s Pikachu. Pokémon’s “antagonist” Jessie has long crimson hair that starts slicked back in the front and curls as it cascades into a tighter curl right at the bottom.
Aside from the constant hair treatments that go along with maintaining longer hairstyles (there’s no way she’d achieve that signature shine to her hair otherwise), there’s the long gel and hairspray process to top it all off. Hopefully, boss Giovanni pays Jessie well enough to fund her pricey salon visits.
1 Yu-Gi-Oh!- Yugi Muto
Yugi Muto is Yu-Gi-Oh!’s main/title character and may just be the final boss of impossible hairdos to achieve. His signature rigid, spikey hairdo alone would take an intense hair-drying and styling session with more than a few empty hairspray bottles left at the end of the lengthy process.
To make things even more complicated, Yugi also has three different hair colors; and while it may look simple on paper, making sure all the colors stay separated instead of muddling all together into a multicolor mess is a near impossible task in real life!
Our hearts go out to all the cosplayers that plan on going to the next convention as Yugi Muto.
Bonus: Vtuber- Shu Yamino
While not an anime character, Nijisanji Vtuber Shu Yamino is definitely worth mentioning when it comes to high-maintenance hairdos. The sorcerer has even Yugi beat as he has four different hair colors in total! Shu has mostly black hair with hot pink highlights near his fringe, dark purple on the inner section of his longer layers, topped off with a blonde “banana” on his bangs. Only a sorcerer could pull this stylish hairdo off!
