RELATED: 10 Games To Play If You Liked Little Nightmares II

After beating the game, or while those that don’t have a PS4 wait to get their hands on it, fans may want a similar action RPG to play. Here are ten great games that are similar to Ys: Monstrum Nox.

10 Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is a free open-world RPG that came out in 2020 on the PS4, PC, and mobile devices. It will also release on the PS5 and Switch. There are a lot of characters to control in this title, with players easily being able to switch between four of them at a time, similar to the Ys games.

However, players can also team up with each other and play as one of the characters in their party. As only part of the game has been released so far, players can continuously look forward to many updates.

9 Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry has always been one of the most popular hack and slash franchises and this installment is the newest in the main series in over a decade. It came out in 2019 on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A better version, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition came out a year later for the Xbox Series X and PS5.

Players control Nero, Dante, and a new protagonist, V, to defeat a demon named Urizen. Most fans consider this to be one of the best installments in the franchise, so for those looking for something darker than Ys but still has a lot of similarities, this is a great title to play.

8 Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII is one of the most popular RPGs of all time and, after years of working on it, Square Enix released a remake of it last year. It released on the PS4 and a PS5 version with new content will come out this June. Retelling and expanding the beginning of the original game, players can control Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, and Barret as they battle against Shinra in order to save Midgar.

As it ended in a very unexpected way, fans can’t wait to see what will happen in the upcoming sequel that seems to tell a whole new story.

7 Kingdom Hearts II

Another popular Square Enix RPG that shares similarities to Ys: Monstrum Nox is Kingdom Hearts II. It came to the PS2 in 2006 and has released on other platforms since with other games in the series. This installment continues Sora, Donald, and Goofy’s adventure to defeat the heartless and save the worlds while looking for Riku and King Mickey.

There are also new enemies, the nobodies, and some of the worlds are based on Disney films that were not in the series before. Unlike the original game, this has a lot more hack and slash elements and removes the parts of the game that made it feel like a platformer. A lot of players think of this installment as the best in the franchise.

6 Xenoblade Chronicles

One of Nintendo’s newest franchises is Xenoblade Chronicles, which began in 2010 when the first installment came to the Wii. Since, it has also released on the New 3DS and the Switch, with the latter being the Definitive Edition.

In this open-world action RPG, players control Shulk, who can see into the future when using his weapon, the Monado. With this ability, he goes on an epic journey that served as the first title in Monolith Soft’s newest Xeno series.

5 Fire Emblem Warriors

Monolith Soft isn’t the only studio working on games for Nintendo. Koei Tecmo has made three games similar to the Dynasty Warriors titles using Nintendo’s characters and settings. The second one that they made is Fire Emblem Warriors.

When Gristonne’s king, Oskar, caused the royal Aytolis family to be separated in his goal to resurrect Velezark, an evil dragon, his son, Darios, and Aytolis’ prince and princess join forces with other heroes throughout the series in order to defeat him. Fire Emblem Warriors released in 2017 for the New 3DS and the Switch.

4 Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is the newest game that Koei Tecmo and Nintendo teamed up to make, releasing only a few months ago on the Switch. Many enjoyed this more than the first title, Hyrule Warriors, since Age of Calamity’s story is connected to Breath of the Wild.

Set in a separate timeline, the kingdom of Hyrule learns that Calamity Ganon is planning to strike, causing the Champions to team up so they can change the future. Players control all of the Champions, as well as other characters that were introduced throughout Breath of the Wild. Those that were disappointed by the lack of story in the critically acclaimed open-world game will not be disappointed with this installment.

3 Horizon: Zero Dawn

An open-world game that is similar to Ys is Horizon: Zero Dawn. It came to the PS4 in 2017 and PC in 2020. Aloy, a girl who was treated terribly by the Nora tribe since she was born tries to be accepted by them.

However, Aloy is attacked in the process and goes on an epic adventure to learn about her past, as well as many mysteries about the world around her. With a sequel, Horizon: Forbidden West, coming later this year, now is a great time to play this title.

2 Darksiders III

Darksiders III is a prequel to the original game and it released in 2018 on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. As with the other installments, this title follows the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. This time, players control Fury, who goes on a journey for the Charred Council, who sends her to get the Seven Deadly Sins.

There are always major changes in gameplay between each title of the series and Fury’s adventure is a great way to introduce Darksiders to Monstrum Nox fans.

1 The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel IV

Nihon Falcom, the developers behind the Ys series, is also known for The Legend of Heroes, with the most recent main installment being Trails of Cold Steel IV. It originally came out on the PS4 in 2019, but it was also released on Windows, Google Stadia, and the Nintendo Switch on April 9, 2021.

This is the final title in the Trails of Cold Steel arc. While waiting for whatever the next Ys title will be, fans should check out Nihon Falcom’s other games and this one will certainly not disappoint.
