Dark Souls is one of From Software’s biggest franchises, being the studio’s breakout hit after a long history of experimental adventure titles and the Armored Core series. After making a name for itself the studio went on to develop several sequels to Dark Souls as well as other games with similar gameplay and structure.

Dark Souls: Nightfall received a delay announcement just days ago, with a teaser for the new release date created to build fan excitement. Grimrukh, one of the lead developers on Nightfall, says the delay was made partially to coincide with Elden Ring’s delay. Nightfall’s world and story are a secret for now, so players will have to wait until the release on January 21, 2022. The month span between Nightfall and Elden Ring’s releases will hopefully be enough time for dedicated players to complete the mod in time for the Elden Ring launch.
The team working on the Nightfall mod has an impressive history. Several members of the team have worked on other high-profile mods before, with the project lead having previously created both Daughters of Ash and Roguelike Souls. Daughters of Ash is especially impressive, having added whole new enemies and bosses, so Nightfall has some seriously high expectations to live up to. With the team staying so quiet about the mod’s world, all players have to go on are old trailers and the occasional glimpse of in-development content.
Nightfall requires a specific version of Dark Souls to work; owners of the old Prepare to Die Edition will need to upgrade to Dark Souls Remastered to make the mod work properly. While this may be frustrating for some, it is understandable as the newer Remastered Edition likely makes things easier by being less out of date. The YouTube channel has gone many months without uploading, so hopefully the final mod will be worth the anticipation.
In the YouTube description, the release date trailer describes the mod as a “direct, fan-made sequel to Dark Souls,” implying that new fan lore will be visible in Nightfall. While fan lore usually doesn’t make it into official canon materials, it makes for an interesting expansion to the setting of the first Dark Souls and provides even more for the story-focused fans to dive into. Nightfall is shaping up to high expectations and will hopefully be up to the standard set in the creators’ previous works.
