The former captain retired hurt after suffering a grade-two strain in his left hamstring during the second Test against the Black Caps in Christchurch.
Mathews batted until tea on day four, but did not return after the interval and was absent as New Zealand wrapped up a crushing 423-run victory on the final day to win the series.
The injury-prone Mathews will play no part in the limited-overs encounters with Kane Williamson’s side and could miss two Tests in Australia.
“Angelo had a scan last night, and it’s a grade-two hamstring strain,” said Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal after the Test.
“The physio said he’s out for four weeks.”
