“I hate seeing that,” Cardinals manger Mike Matheny told reporters after the game. “We got real fortunate. It could have been a lot worse. His beak is a little sore right now. It’s still got some blood trickling out of it. Structurally, everything checked out good. No concussion, either.”

The Cardinals avenged Holliday’s injury with a 6-5 comeback win after being down four runs in the eighth inning.
Padres relievers Ryan Buchter and Carlos Villanueva were in full meltdown mode as they squandered a 5-1 lead. Buchter allowed four runs in the eighth; Villanueva, a former Cardinal, suffered the loss after issuing two walks and then a walkoff single to Aledmys Diaz.
