The popular and mysterious Cloverfield franchise came on the scene in 2008 with a good old-fashioned monster-takes-Manhattan film. The first installment was a found footage film about an attack on NYC, told through the eyes of a group of friends with a video camera one fateful night. It was followed up by Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016, a surprising switch in tone and style, which chronicled an endangered woman’s forced quarantine with a sinister host during an attack on the surfaced. The third installment, 2018’s Cloverfield Paradox, took place on a space station where a particle accelerator malfunctions, launching an explanation for the creatures and phenomena of the existing franchise.

Reeves, who has spent his time since Cloverfield directing and producing hits like The Batman, told ComicBook.com he’s excited about the Cloverfield franchise’s future. “I have no idea. I’m super excited about us doing more, and I can’t give you information about that of course because that’s the way Cloverfield works,” Reeves said. “To be honest with you, you never know what you’re going to do. Even though my work is all genre work, I have to feel something personal about it. Cloverfield is very much about my anxieties.”

Reeves, known for his early work with Abrams on the hit WB show Felicity, directed the original Cloverfield, which capitalized on the popularity of both big-budget Godzilla movies and found footage films. Cloverfield celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, bringing new attention to the franchise, including an anniversary 4K Steelbook Blu-ray edition. When discussing the possibility of directing a new Cloverfield movie, Reeves said, “I think if another story were to present itself where I was like, ‘Gosh I have to tell that story.’ It’s not impossible. I wouldn’t say that’s a for sure thing, but I would never say never."

News has already broken that Babak Anvari (Wounds, Under the Shadow) is already on board to write and direct a new Cloverfield film. Though that project is still shrouded in secrecy, more information will surface in the coming year, along with hints and speculations about what’s to come in internet spheres, much of which is driven by the franchise’s firm embrace and proliferation of viral marketing and related web content.

The Cloverfield 15th anniversary 4K Steelbook hits shelves on January 17, 2023.
