The film came after the blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home, and with Morbius being an active character within the Spider-Man universe, they expected that the Spidey-mania would rake in more fans coming out to see Morbius, but that did not happen at all. The film only managed to pull in $73 million in the US and $163 million worldwide, which is very low for a film in the superhero genre that commonly dominates at the box office.

Despite being far from a success, Smith isn’t letting the film’s lack of success get to him too much. “Yeah, it was thrown under the bus,” he said to Rolling Stone UK. “But you just have to roll with it. What else are you gonna do? It’s a film, at the end of the day, we’re not saving lives. For whatever reason, it didn’t quite work out, and… It is what it is.” Smith has been a part of other box office flops in the past, which definitely prepared him for Morbius. Smith was a part of the 2015 film Terminator Genysis, which didn’t do so hot either during its run in theaters.

Morbius has also found itself to be a very popular joke topic on social media, with many users making fun of the film’s moments, as audiences have deemed the film extremely cringe and lacking a lot of substance in comparison to the other superhero films that have hit the big screen in recent years. Morbius even began to trend on social media as people jokingly called for Sony to release a sequel, but that seems very unlikely since the film underperformed. The post-credits scene left things open for Leto to reprise the role, however, Sony has yet to confirm any plans or possibilities of this happening in the near or distant future.

Smith looking on the bright side and not letting Morbius flopping at the box office get him down is definitely a good thing to see. Considering even the highest paid actors have been a part of projects that underperform, it’s just a hiccup that comes with the career. Nonetheless, as Smith continues to grow his career catalogue, there is definitely a chance that he’ll end up being a part of a blockbuster film.

Morbius is now available to stream digitally.
