The aim, according to the companies involved, is to provide the ultimate in 3D animation, motion graphics, digital sculpting, and everything else in the 3D artist’s toolkit. And here’s what you need to know about the acquisition.
Maxon Acquires Pixologic and ZBrush
In a bid for ubiquity, motion design and VFX software heavyweight Maxon is acquiring the name and product assets of Pixologic, mother brand to 3D sculpting favorite ZBrush.
If you’re already a 3D artist or are interested in 3D modeling in any capacity, you’ve likely already heard of ZBrush; it’s one of the most-loved 3D sculpting tools in the industry.
So, what does this unprecedented corporate takeover mean for your own work, if you’re already a ZBrush die-hard? The good news is from what we can tell, not much. Your favorite 3D sculpting software will be just as fabulous and as functional as ever post-acquisition.
What This Acquisition Means for ZBrush Users
Maxon is acquiring Pixologic, with the deal expected to officially close in Q4, 2021. Details aren’t especially plentiful, but we do know that Pixologic founder Ofer Alon will not be stepping down from his role when acquisition goes through.
In the Maxon press release covering the announcement, Alon said:
An encouraging sentiment, indeed. Maxon CEO David McGavran has also been very forthcoming about his hopes for a promising future in perfect firmament with what ZBrush has already done for 3D artists worldwide. His goal? To bring the best of both worlds together, with complete respect for everything that the ZBrush community already loves about the application.
Until the acquisition is completed, both companies will continue to operate as usual, with no disruption in service for anybody already using the products and services involved. Alon’s inclusion in this development should ensure that the original prevailing spirit of ZBrush and the rest of the Pixologic family will live on, untarnished.
ZBrush Has a New Home, But It’s Business As Usual
ZBrush isn’t the only offering on the Pixologic table, but it is the most well-known and most widely-used. Considering just how incredible Maxon’s own wheelhouse is, the 3D app only stands to get better through this acquisition.
